Hi everyone, as a frequent poster on the Dawgpost and Dawgvent, I decided to start my own UGA blog to give my insight on all things UGA and also invite folks to share their opinions and insights here as well. Since I am computer and web challenged, this will be a work in progress.
First off, let me say that I am very optmistic about the football recruiting season and the men's basketball season. I just hope that more UGA faithful will start to follow the Fox Hoop hounds as this season progresses. Speaking of hoops, since I am just starting this blog, let me share my thoughts about having both a quality football and basketball program in Athens.
I have for years been a big college basketball fan. When I attended school in Athens years ago, Hugh Durham led the team to its only regular season title (well, I assume that to be the case unless the Harrick scandal team won it which I don't believe they did). I have always believed that with the right coach in place, the basketball program can have enourmous success. Hugh Durham did a fine job but he reached the highest point he could lead us, we found Tubby and I thought, this is IT! Of course the Boston Celtics had to fire their coach and lure Rick Pitino away from Kentucky, then Vince Dooley basically conceeded that we couldn't match the Kentucky offer. Jirsa was a huge disaster, Harrick while a GREAT basketball coach, was also a disaster. Dennis Felton, while I loved his approach to discipline and doing things the right way, was simply overmatched at the SEC level. Enter Mark Fox, a virtual unknown in this part of the country. I had heard of him being a big college basketball fan but had no idea what type coach he would be. I was also worried about him being able to recruit this area but he helped that out by hiring two assistants that had recruited the ATL and the state for years at other schools. Last year I was very impressed with Coach Fox, the record did not indicate how competitive the team was and then this off season, he was able to get Marcus Thornton to join the program, and get the huge signing of Kentavious Caldwell, a player that many consider the top player in the state of Ga for the 2011 class. If Mark Fox can continue to recruit the Atlanta area and state of Ga, this basketball program can REALLY take off. Then it will become an issue of making sure we compensate him enough to keep him here. This program is truly a sleeping giant.
Back to football recruiting, I am looking for January 5th, 2011 to be the start of some positive news out of Athens for a change. Meaning, I am expecting some top football stars to announce nationally they plan to attend the University of Ga. If there is ever a time our program needs some positive energy, I think it would be right now.
