Tomorrow is the big day!!!

So tomorrow is signing day in Athens. Besides the first opening kickoff every fall, signing day is perhaps the most exciting time in college football, certainly the case for UGA faithful. This year has been an interesting year for the Bulldogs. Some are saying currently the class is just average, thanks to being ranked in the lower teens to early 20's in some services, while ESPN ranks the class #5 nationally. I personally like the ESPN ranking, not because it is higher, but because it values the kids committed along with the needs of the team. Many of the other services, it is more about the total # of kids on your list as opposed to the quality of the kids and more importantly, where your needs were/are in restocking your roster. I think for UGA, it was pretty clear cut-OL and RB were two areas of need. Also we need to replace both kickers, and then we need to cotinue to increase our depth on the defense-as good as the defense was last year, depth in the second half often times kept us from being a great defense. So, let's take a look at the UGA list as it currently stands and then add those that are still considering UGA and will make their selections tomorrow. Thanks to rivals site, I copied and pasted information.

Ok, so first area of need, OL. Theus, Beard, and Pyke are it. Course we also lost Chester Brown due to immigration issues (he appears headed to UCF) but we are still in the running for one more-will talk about that later. SO, to me it is a bit disappointing to only have three signed, because ideally to me I think we should sign 5 every year. Considering our history of OL leaving the program for bad shoulders, bad knees or jsut simply not panning out, strength in numbers. That being said, lets remember who we still have on our roster as OL, and their class. We have 12 kids already on campus, none of which will be SR's next year, all but 3 have game experience. Add in Theus and Beard to the mix, we will have a solid two deep next year that we really have not enjoyed in years.

As for RB, we have Gurley and Marshall coming in, along with Crowell, Malcome and Samuel, Thomas to me has see his last PT except maybe special teams. Certainly we have improved our depth here, and Marshall is already on campus as well.

As for our depth on D, adding Taylor, Atkins and Jordan Jenkins, really helps our depth there. If you look at our DL after next year, we need guys ready to play because John Jenkins and Geathers are gone more than likely. JJ and Washingto are also gone more than likely, so having another elite level pass rusher is key. Adding Sheldon Dawson, many have compared him to Boykin is a nice get from Memphis.

As for our targets left-a quick note about each-I had a long post here and it did not save out. I HATE when that happens.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, VERY talented kid, have seen him play. Many think UGA is the team to beat, would love to land him but have to watch out for FSU and UF here, Lowndes County seems to always send their kids to FSU.

Avery Young-cousin of former UGA star Thomas Davis, Mom lives in Ga and wants him at UGA, Dad lives in Florida. Hopefully he sees our depth chart and follows the wishes of Mom.

Cordarrelle Patterson-supposedly down to UGA and UT, a JUCO all american and will likely be a one and done wherever he goes, he is that good at WR. UGA thought to be the leader, originally from SCarolina, so that helps our cause. If he is cleared academically, likely UGA.

Josh Dawson-committed to Vandy but says he is 50/50 Vandy/UGA. Is from Tucker HS which has normally been a UGA recruiting hotbed. Have to think he will continue that tradition.

Jacquay Williams-committed to AU but UGA coming after him hard, likely sticks with AU but he has several younger teammates that just got UGA offers he has made comments about playing with them in college.

Brandon Greene-committed to Bama and says he plans to stick with that but still speculation he could flip-UGA coaches have recruited him hard but I say he stays with Bama.

Also rumors of some other big name kids going with UGA tomorrow, but all of that rumor stuff is really hard to sort out. But, I will say if we end up with 21-22 kids tomorrow, I will be very happy and this class will be nice addition heading into what will be a monster year in 2013 after we have a great 2012 season.

One personal note, have heard a local player to me has committed to UGA-Devin Gillespie from Grayson HS. Now, I believe he was offered the chance to be a preferred walk on, the kid is only about 5-9 or 5-10 around 175-180lbs but what a great football player. If you like how Blake Sailors plays on our special teams, this kid will be much in the same mold-he is a very good addition so hope that is indeed his plan and it works out for him.

The pain continues for our hoops team, recruiting update, positive note about baseball

OK, everyone would expect us to lose to Kentucky and sure enough it happened yet again last night. The score was actually pretty close, 57-44. Kentucky is the #1 ranked team in the nation and we only lost by 13, heck we lost to Bama at home by more points than that. I think the game that I am bothered with more was the Saturday loss to Ole Miss. The score indicates a close loss, 66-63 but the Dogs were down by 12 with about a minute to go and managed to cut it down to 3 and had 2 shots to try to tie it at the end. But, that was more a result of Ole Miss missing some FT's coupled with just clutch shooting-the bottom line is Ole Miss should NOT be able to come to Athens and win that game. This is what has me concerned. This team has some pieces to it, Gerald Robinson is explosive and can make some plays for you-either scoring himself or penetrating and dishing for open jump shots-he doesn't do this often enough as our offense still remains one of the most boring looking system I have seen since Dennis Felton left town-we rotate the ball around the perimeter, back and forth, a low post will come charging to the top of the key, only to dish back to a guard-back and forth is goes, shot clock counts down 5,4,3,2 and then someone lauches a long three as the buzzer sounds. So what did we have last year, first of all we had a big in Thompkins that could shoot from the outside with consistency-we don't have that this year unless you consider Nemi a big-he is a tweener. Second of all, we had Travis Leslie who could shoot but could also drive strong to the basket, he was also great at offensive rebounding. We had Robinson who was more a threat because he had the other two guys as offensive threats around him, and finally you had Dustin Ware who has struggled this year but that is because the opposition knows this year is a big offensive threat. Last year, as teams looked to double Trey, we could kick to Dustin for a wide open 3. This year the shot is not so wide open any longer.

Mark Fox is a good guy, I do believe he can coach basketball BUT I also think he is in over his head here. WHY??? Because the guy is NOT the recruiter we need. Last night they were talking about UK having SIX McDonald All American's on their team. Granted, we are talking about Kentucky but geez, we have our first since '92 on our roster this year. Credit to Fox for recruiting Caldwell-Pope, but we have to recruit more kids on that level. Take a look at our recruiting class from last year-

Caldwell-Pope was an elite level talent that had offers from everywhere-great job landing him. 5 stars
John Cannon-offers from App State, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Asheville, Old Dominion, Richmond, Princeton, Western Carolina. NEVER should have offered/signed this kid. 3 stars
Tim Dixon-had offers from Bama, AU, FSU and Okie State, 3 stars but have done nothing thus far.
Nemanja Djurisic-offers from East Carolina, Arizona State, Okie State and NCState. 3 stars, good find.
John Florveus-JUCO, offers from Marshall, UTEP, Washington State, 3 stars, NEVER should have signed him.

Dixon was the most sought after prospect besides KCP, but he has contributed really nothing this year-he COULD turn out to be a decent player in time-like Donte' Williams is night and day from last year to this year. But Florveus and Cannon, HORRIBLE decisions as we were by far the best programs to offer either of those kids and from watching them, I can see why.

Fox has recruited pretty well for this upcoming class but none of the below kids are KCP level and we will be losing both our starting guards next year. Fox has got to be counting on continued improvement from Williams, Thornton and Vincent Williams, and hope KCP sticks around-which he should do without question as he is far from NBA ready right now. But take a look at these kids and then let me point out the top level  kids in Ga that we MISSED out on.

Kenny Gaines-Guard, had offers from MANY big times schools (I do have throw in though, not offers from the basketball powers like UNC, Duke, Kentucky etc), 3 star and talented player.
Charles Mann-Guard-again lot of big name offers,(biggest hoop school to offer is UCONN), 3 star and future PG most likely.
Brandon Morris-Forward, again many big offers, (best being UF and Memphis probably) 3 stars and also talented but very thin prospect.

So, on the surface a solid looking class. All three of these guys figure to get significant minutes next year, especially Gaines and Mann. Now let's take a look at the Rivals 150 list and point out all the kids from Georgia on this list, Gaines made the list at 125 btw. Morris and Mann did not make it,

Shaq Goodwin #26 4 stars, signed with Memphis
Robert Morris #28 4 stars, signed with GT
Tony Parker #33, unsigned but most likely head to Duke or Ohio State
Jordan Price #71 4 stars signed with AU
Charles Mitchell #76, 4 stars unsigned we actually have a shot with this one-would be a BIG pickup
Tevin Glass #81, unsigned and not sure about this kid, appears only has two offers from smaller schools-maybe grade issues??
Marcus Hunt #100, signed with GT
Chris Bolden #107, signed with GT
Jaron Blossomgame, #119 signed with Clemson
Evan Nolte #120,signed with UVA
FINALLY, Kenny Gaines #125

So, 10 players from our state rated ahead of our top recruit of the moment Gaines. Granted, recruiting rankings can be overrated for sure, but still you can see who is kicking our tails in recruiting this year, GT. Why is that-considering the mess they have been in with Hewitt, bringing in a coach from Dayton which is certainly is closer to Georgia than Nevada but still not the well known program. Sure, GT plays in the ACC which still, surprising to me, offers a better hoops tradition than does the SEC. But, Gregory hired assistant coaches with ATL/GA ties, ties to AAU ball etc and has landed a much better class than Fox despite being on the job for less than a year. That is pathetic folks.

As for the rest of this season, I suspect we might win one or two more games. I am not saying Fox should be fired but if he manages to go 2-14 in conference play, I would strongly consider making a move now although I think next year will be the year of change. Check out this stat from Dean Legge of Dawgpost-

The Bulldogs have won only 37 conference games since the 2005 season – that’s the worst in the SEC… by far. Is this all Fox's fault - no, not exclusively. But he got the praise last year so he will draw some criticism this year.

Ok so in case you were wondering, throw out this year, 1-5, lets look at 2006-2011 seasons. That is 6 seasons at 16 games for a total of 96 SEC games. But we will throw out this year, so 91-36=65. Yep, our record the past 6 years in SEC play, 31-65 which translates to 5-11 conference record. That is BAD! Granted I think UGA fans don't suppor the hoops program enough but those numbers don't lie-why SHOULD fans support such a bad product. The good news is we have an AD in place now that has come from a program that has built a strong hoops program, at a school that you would have to say is still a football school but UF has built up a total sports program that we all should take note of. Also, that program is one that is NOT afraid to make changes quickly-they fired Zook after 3 seasons, they fired their baseball coach after one losing season-they do not put up with coaches/programs that do not put a top quality product on the floor. Fox inherited two NBA players-along with some pretty decent players in Price, Barnes, and Ware. He got a break when Robinson transferred in. But his recruiting has not been up to par and a big part of that is because of his hiring of assistant coaches, he lack of ties to the AAU and ATL recruiting circles. I personally like Mark Fox but I am just not sure how much longer we can give him. He needs to sign Charles Mitchell this spring-that 4some would be a great start but how much better will we be next year with relying on these freshmen to come in and score. KCP with a strong supporting cast could be a really solid player-as of now he is a streaky shooter, good defender, makes hustle plays on the floor, he is a solid player. This team can be better next year but just how bad is this year going to be and then in turn, how much is that going to bring extreme heat to Fox's seat which could impact his recruiting efforts for 2013.

Ok so this time next week, it is national signing day. The only news so far this week is that one of our commitments can't enroll because of immigration rules. Now, I am all for the immigration rules Ga has on the books and UGA also has rules. I guess I just don't really get them. Especially with GT just getting a commitment from a kid from Austrailia. Here is the rule as the AJC has it-

“A person who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible for admission to any University System institution which, for the two most recent academic years, did not admit all academically qualified applicants [except for cases in which applicants were rejected for non-academic reasons].”

So I guess Chester Brown was not legally a resident of the USA?? I just don't get this much at all but the bottom line, he is gone and now we only have 16 spots filled. 3 of those have already enrolled and so it is becoming more and more obvious to me that we are NOT going to sign a full class this year-which is very disappointing. Right now we are still waiting on the following top recruits to make a decision-

Josh Harvey-Clemons, was thought a UGA lean, was down to UGA/UF but now good ole FSU is back in the mix after a great visit last weekend. Lowndes kids seem to ALWAYS end up at FSU so the fact they are back in it, that scares me to be honest. Richt visited JHC at church last night, I have to believe our coaches have built up the best relationship with him and we will get him but this one is scary. My recruiting guru Lowndes25 has told me he believes we get him but has also said if kids stick to their word!!
Avery Young-big OL from down on South Florida, most think between us and AU. I would HOPE this kid looks at our depth chart and slobbers all over himself. His Mom wants him in Athens, let's hope he follows Mommas wishes.
Sheldon Dawson-committed to Memphis but his HS coach recently said he thought UGA was the leader-said he likes how UGA used Boykin and this kid could fill that role.
Josh Dawson-committed to Vandy but now is 50-50 Vandy/UGA. This kid is from Tucker HS, which for the most part typically sends kids to Athens.
Cordarrelle Patterson-thought to be a UGA lean a JUCO WR that supposed will make immediate impact but might have grade issues.

There could be a few more surprises, I am checking on that this week and report back anything I hear. I think we have at LEAST a 50-50 shot of getting all the guys above, which would put us at 21 total. I could live with that but would like to get up to 23 or so which could very well happen.

Final note, the first baseball poll is out for this year and the Diamond Dogs come in ranked #11. That is a good start, let's hope it is a good season for the team. They had a nice bounce back season last year, just need to improve on that this year and continue to build the program up. In baseball, we have been WAY too up and down for the type talent this state produces.

All for now, next hoops game is not until next Wednesday, at Auburn. Let's hope the guys rest up some and get better as AU is a game we have a shot to steal on the road-they are not much better than us if at all. But neither was Ole Miss and they came to our house and got the W. There simply are no wins you can take to the bank for this team unfortunately.

Great win for the hoops team, nothing new on the recruiting front but a surprise or two

Ok so I have been very critical of Mark Fox and his recruiting efforts, and that is not going to change anytime soon. I think the 3 kids he has signed that will be coming in next year are all solid and will help the program. I think KCP is a very talented kid as well. I think what has troubled me the most about his recruiting efforts is lack of quality big men. But, I DO believe we are getting some improved play from our guys inside-especially Donte' Williams. I think the EURO kid, Djurisic is playing better than anyone could have expected. I do have questions about why we offered and signed John Cannon in particular when we already had signed Tim Dixon-a kid that could be decent in a year or two, also the JUCO Florveus who is blocking a few shots, contributing a little bit but nothing special. The problem Fox has to me is he recruits guys that are NOT college ready immediately-second tier guys and they develop into strong players by year 3. I think that is certianly the case with Williams, heck, I think Thornton is much better this year than last although he still doesn't score like I thought he might. But, we just don't usually get a bigger guy that can help us from day 1 like KCP has done at the guard/wing spot. That is what keeps us at our level, and allows the teams like UK, UF etc to play at a much higher level. Obviously those two have longer traditions of winning-UK is on another level than anyone else in the SEC, but the fact that UF, Bama, Miss State, Arkansas, those type programs can win pretty consistently, that is what I want to expect for UGA. With the talent this state produces in hoops, we continue to be a sleeping giant in hoops, we have just got to get something started/established and keep it going. Just seems like every time something good happens for UGA hoops, something equally as bad happens next.

The bottom line is that we have some decent parts but they rarely are working together at the same time. Meaning, the guards might play well one game but we get nothing from the inside, or vice versa the big guys actually do something and the guards can't throw it in the ocean-that was the case last night. Donte' had 11 pts and 8 rebounds, Djurisic had 11pts-he is a tweener but gets a lot of his points down low. Robinson led us with 16 pts but he had to take 19 shots to get his 16 pts, hitting only 6 of his 19 shots. Ware our other senior guard, only scored 5 points, shooting 2-9 from the floor, and freshman leading scorer KCP scored 9 but only hit 4 of 14 shots, including 0-8 behind the three point line. Thankfully for us, UT was equally as bad shooting the ball. But honestly, our point totals now for SEC games, 59, 48, 66, and 57. So we average 57.5 points per game in SEC games. That is NOT going to get you many wins in this conference. But where can we get any more points from our team?? We have to me two legit scoring threats in Robinson and KCP and Djurisic is probably third in that respect. Ware is proving that without a true force down low, he has trouble knocking down shots. If teams don't really respect your post play, they are not going to clog the middle and give up the wide open shots that Ware proved he could knock down last year with Trey in the middle. Robinson is the guy we have that can cause some problems for the defense because he is so quick and can penetrate, shoot, or dish for wide open looks. But, GR is not really a true point guard. SO again, we just have some pieces and it will be up to Coach Fox to somehow assemble those pieces in a way that will allow us to pull out a few more wins. Our next game is at home against Ole Miss-a team we really should and need to beat. Ole Miss is not a pushover, as evidenced by their win at home last night against a pretty quality Miss State team, but still this Saturday presents our team another chance to pick up an SEC game at home against a team that does not have a huge talent advantage. A little about Ole Miss, they are 12-6 on the season, compared to our record of 10-8. SEC play they are 2-2 compared to our 1-3. They have wins against Miss State (75-68) and Arkansas (71-63) both those games at home. Losses on the road to LSU (81-55 OUCH) and Auburn (69-68). So, obviously we have had the MUCH tougher schedule and the fact they have lost both conference games on the road is a good sign. They have won a couple noteworthy games on the road, at DePaul 70-68 and Penn State 72-70. By and large though, they have struggled on the road, also losing at Marquette, at Southern Miss, Middle Tenn State, and Dayton. This one of those we must protect this house/home court games. With UK coming up next Tuesday, yep, we need to get this W. Game is Saturday at 4p on the SEC network-likely to be Peachtree TV for those in the ATL area.

So nothing new to report on recruiting front, except a few surprises, Mike Davis immediately committed to SCarolina after Gurley picked UGA. He may or may not still visit UGA and Clemson. His older brother played at Clemson so I would not rule them out, either way we will see him soon. We are due to play Clemson in 2013 and 2014. Kendarious Whitehead who had been leaning to UGA for many months yesterday committed to NCST. It was actually down to Clem and NCST. You have to believe that Jordan Jenkins surprise pick of UGA might have swayed his decision as well as our hard pressed recruitment of Josh Harvey-Clemons from Lowndes. Speaking of JHC, he has a great visit to UGA last weekend and now heads to FSU this weekend. Per my recruiting sources, FSU although typically appears to be the school of choice for most Lowndes players, JHC will be the exception to that rule as his grandparents who are raising him don't want him there. Many believe he will ultimately pick UGA and we really need to secure his signature on signing day-I have watched him in person and he is quite the athlete.

We now have 17 commitments, with three of those actual signees-early enrollee kids, Keith Marshall, Fauta Baton, and Mark Beard. Considering we only lost one JR to the NFL, I think it is quite possible we will not sign a class of 25 this year. If you look at 17, which is really 14, and look at the kids we are after, I am not sure we get above 20 or so honestly. I do think that next year will be a monster year. We should have a couple early enroll kids yet again and considering how many SR's we will have, also some JR's you feel sure make the jump next year, I expect a full 25 or 27 with EE's. Next year appears to be a great year for talent in the state of Ga, so I really believe our talent level is going to continue to be at an all time high-the kids we are getting now in this class, many are difference makers and are adding to our quality depth. If you really want to know how Bama/LSU seem so dominating, you have to look beyond their top 22, the fact they have such quality depth waiting in the wings-it helps you cope with injuries during the season, helps you deal with early NFL defections etc. I think this is the path we are on right now. Yes, UGA and Coach Richt have always recruited well but I think some years have been MUCH better than others and now I believe our coaches realize, you simply can't afford a bad year in recruiting. You have to keep stacking that talent and building depth.

All for now, I will be back early next week for a hoops update and also any recruiting news I might have. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Another recruiting chip to fall today, Goodbye Orson, basketball at Vandy tmw

So today is the day that Todd Gurley, the "other" RB out of North Carolina (Tarboro HS)  is to make his verbal commitment. Gurley is very good friends with Keith Marshall, of course the #1 rated RB already in Athens also from North Carolina. Gurley is a different style back. While Marshall is listed at 5-11 190, Gurley is 6-1 195. He is a kid that is also capable of playing on the defensive side but our coaches are recruiting him strictly as a RB. From looking at film of these two backs, Gurley appears much thicker than Marshall and is also a back that is more about breaking tackles and being physical-although in the Under Armour game, Marshall showed he has toughness as well. My #1 recruiting guru (Lowndes25) has already made it known that Gurley will indeed select UGA later today. If he does select us, that makes 17 commits, although we have 3 early enrollees. I am HORRIBLE in math so I will not even begin to try to explain the new rules when it comes to the number of kids you can sign. I do know the limit is 25/85 which of course is 25 in a given year, 85 total kids on scholarship. Where it gets tricky is early enrollees and then you have schools like Bama that will greyshirt kids-meaning, they sign but then agree to hold off enrolling until the second semester-thus they become early enrollees for the next class. Bottom line, there are ways around the system and schools like Bama and others will find loopholes. Speaking of Bama, for all those folks that were so excited about them beating LSU, I simply don't get it. Why be excited for them-they are coached by a man that would as soon cut a kids arm off if that helped him win a football game. I listened to him yesterday call Bama an organization?? NO, Alabama is a university Nick, but you run that program like an organization, code word for NFL franchise. Also, in them winning the game, it essentially meant the regular season meant NOTHING. The same argument people make about football not having a playoff system because it supposedly makes the regular season less important, should be upset about Bama getting a second shot at LSU. LSU played a FAR more difficult schedule than did Bama, they BEAT Bama on the road, yet they were forced with having to beat a very talented and well coached team a second time. Let's see, how many times in a rematch in college football does the team that won game 1 win game 2?? I don't have the exact numbers but we do have the last two examples that tell a huge story. Back in the 90's, FSU beat UF last game of the season only to have to play UF again in the Sugar bowl, UF blew them out. Then you have the LSU/Bama game. Again, the fact LSU beat WV and Oregon, along with Bama, three teams that won BCS bowl games, they also beat Arkansas who won the Cotton and ended up ranked in the top 10, beat UGA who should have won their bowl game, beat AU-LSU would have beat Okie State, Stanford etc, but they played Bama and lost.

Bama winning that game to me stinks for so many reasons but also keep in mind, Bama recruits our state a lot more than does LSU. They already have the #2 rated player in the nation for class of 2013 committed to them (LB Foster from LaGrange, Ga) and have the #1 rated player in the nation as a strong lean (Nkemdiche from Grayson, Ga). Them winning a national title does NOT help our chances. But, help could be on the horizon. Now that they have won another title, now that Kirby Smart has publicly made it known he wants a head coaching job and thinks he is ready for that challenge, he is going to be the #1 choice for a lot of schools NEXT year. Also factor in that the LB coach Sal Sunseri, one of the Tide's best overall recruiters, is interviewing for the Tenn DC position, those are positives in our favor. Also, Nick Saban has shown that he does not stay at programs longer than 6 years, next year will be his 6th year. He might very well stay but any coaching turnover especially when it comes to coaches that are recruiting our top talent in Ga, is a welcoming news for us. Just like the case with Jordan Jenkins, he was a Bama lean for MANY months and even admitted he never really thought he would end up at UGA, he didn't like UGA when the recruiting process started. BUT, Todd Grantham primarily but also Mark Richt chipped away at him and we got him. This leads me to my next point.

Goodbye Orson Charles, I wish this guy only the best in the future-hint to the ATL Falcons, Tony G is eventually going to retire, here is a kid that can come in and be a great weapon for Matt Ryan. The problem is, I think Orson will be selected in the 2nd round but that would be the Falcons first pick of this draft. I am not sure TE is their biggest need, but regardless, I think there is no doubt Orson will make an impact on the next level. This kid was obviously a spiritual young man with a good support system-how many kids can talk daily to a guy like Tony Dungy to get advise on his pro decision. Now, normally I think kids not in the first round should stay another year but in this case, there is really nothing more OC can do in Athens. He will be missed because he really did take a lot of effort and planning from the opposition-they had to account for him in our passing game. The good news, UGA is tight end U and we have two good ones waiting in the wings in Arthur Lynch and Jay Rome. Lynch is just an enourmous kid-6'5 272 and to me he also has NFL written all over him. Now, can he catch like Charles or White for that matter, probably not. But, I have seen enough of him in games and spring to know he CAN catch the football. Also, he is a MUCH better blocker than Charles or White. Considering we are going to have two new tackles on our OL, this is big help. Rome, I think he will continue our legacy of great pass catching TE's as well. He should really be a nice receiving weapon next year. We also have a TE commit from Colquitt County that I got to see in person play against Grayson in the playoffs-he was mostly split out that game but was VERY impressive-he needs a little more weight/strength but the kid can flat out catch the ball and run after the catch. Our other JR's that were considering the draft have all decided to return for their last year. So what does this mean for UGA next year, keep reading.

Our defense next year, quite frankly SHOULD be a top 5, potentially higher defense. We were good last year but we couldn't close out several games that we should have won. SC and MSU being good examples, LSU they kind of collapsed as well. But, I will say in fairness to the defense, the offense and special teams also contributed to second half collapses but you also have to point at the D in two games-SC and MSU that mirrored each other. Never could our D hold to FG's even after turnovers-granted MSU and SCarolina both had defensive scores but hear me out, we had several leads against SCarolina but our D could NOT stop Lattimore, 14 rushes for 94 yards in the 4th quarter-thanks to LeatherHelmet for that stat, also against MSU with our offense putting us up by 7 with under 7 minutes to play, then MSU getting the ball back with under two minutes and ZERO timeouts, they go 85 yards EASILY and only get to third down one time on that drive. SO, my point being, our D was really good in 2011 but I think next year we will be even better. We lost Boykin who simply put, will be missed as he was a special player in all aspects. Also missing will be DeAngelo Tyson-another good player for us. BUT, look at what we have coming back and think about the depth.

WOW, look at that. You think Bama is losing a lot off their D this year, look at us for next year. Now, the good news is, while we do have a LOT of seniors, and we have several JR's that will leave after next year-Ogletree, Geathers (family history dictates this), Jarvis Jones, we will still have some solid players returning for 2013-but here is something eles. Reuben Foster, Robert Nkemdiche-look at where you have a great shot at coming in to play significant minutes as true FR!!! 2013 our DL would be Smith, Thornton, NG-??, Vasser-well, here is where Jordan Jenkins likely fits in, Herrera, Ray Drew, secondary Moore, Swann, Marshall, Chris Sanders. So, what I am saying here is this, NEXT year our D is going to be extremely talented and experienced, 2013, the jury is still out but more chances to come in and play right away if you are good enough to earn it. Everyone is talking about how many off the Bama D for this year will be drafted-I have heard 10 of the starting 11. Let's look at our projected starters next year, here are the guys I say will get drafted without question-Abry Jones, John Jenkins, Kwame Geathers (family history), Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, Baccari Rambo, Shawn Williams, Sanders Commings, and Branden Smith. That would be 9 of 11!! (Ok, so technically it would be 8 of 11 because Geathers and Jenkins both can't start but you get my point) Next year is our year folks if there ever was a year. The key will be Murray (he has got to stop making crucial mistakes in big games) the development of the OL, the emergence of a dependable and talented RB, and of course how will our new kickers pan out. The D is going to keep us in games, the schedule sets up nicely. Let's see what happens.

Finally, another hoops game, another lopsided loss. Obviously we have not been blessed with a favorable early SEC schedule-Bama at home-very deep and talented, UF on the road, Vandy on the road but the team just simply put is NOT good. We have no inside game, if KCP is not hitting his shots (shot badly at UF only scored 8 pts) we struggle to score. I see it getting no better this Saturday against Vandy. They got their big guy back, that KILLED us last year, Festus Ezeli, they have two great shooters in Jenkins and Taylor, they are 12-4 overall 2-0 in SEC play and have won 6 in row. Oh and we never play well up in that gym in Nashville. Again, if we keep it under 20, that will be an acomplishment for this team. I am trying to reserve judgement on Coach Fox until we play a few SEC teams that are on our level, which after Vandy we play UT and Miss at home-those will be the games to watch closely. Course UT beat the Gators in Knox so not sure they are on our level but certainly Miss should be. If we can win those two home games against lesser SEC teams, I will feel much better and I will have hope we might win 4-6 SEC games this year. Lose one or both of those, I can see 2-3 SEC wins. I am not going to bother previewing this game, I hate to be negative but there is just not much to say about our hoops team right now, we are a very at best average team and I don't see things improving much this year. I strongly believe next year is going to be crucial for Coach Fox. We all have to remember, Greg McGarity has NOT hired any of our coaches at this point in time-well, guess he might have hired a women's golf coach or some minor sport but to me, all the major sport teams which for UGA includes Gymnastics, ALL should be under the gun. Mark Richt has obviously done enough to get McGarity's approval for a contract extension. But, Coach Fox, Coach Perno and Coach Clark (gym Dogs), you guys are under the spotlight this year and next. Perno will be watched very closely this year matter of fact. UGA has too much money, resources and talent not to be a serious player in most every sport.

Basketball game is tomorrow, 4p check local listings for TV coverage-thinking it will be Fox sportssouth but there are about 4 networks that carry SEC hoops and football for that matter. Go Dogs, hope you all have a great weekend.

Really quick post, recruiting and basketball tonight

Ok, so the recruiting efforts are starting to pick up steam, first it was Marshall, now it is Jordan Jenkins who committed to UGA on TV last night. This kid is obviously a great talent but what a nice tight knit family, Mom and Dad, sister, and brother-they all were there together, they all helped make the decision together-a far cry from the kid that committed to Bama only to have his Mom say Go Tigers as she liked LSU better. Jordan Jenkins just a few months ago had no thought of being a Bulldog but our coaches, namely Todd Grantham never gave up on him. Bama was his favorite, it came down to Bama and UGA, he decided to stay in state and this is one of those recruiting victories that we need to see more and more. UGA is going to lose players every year, that is a given considering the amount of players this state produces. The key to me is getting the majority of the ones you REALLY want and it is clear Jenkins is one that we really wanted. This continues our trend of getting the elite defensive players in state and I hope it continues again soon, landing us Josh Harvey-Clemons from Lowndes as well as Kenderious Whitehead from MLK. I have seen JCH play in person, he is skinny now but you can tell, a great football player. You watch the title game last night and you see both teams with great defenses, loaded with depth and playmakers, that is what Todd Grantham is building up for us, I think we need more and more depth but not only depth but QUALITY depth which means your #2's don't miss a beat when they enter the game. One thing I feel very comfortable in saying about our 2012 season, I firmly believe our defense is going to keep us in every game we play. Adding players like Jordan Jenkins insures that we will be more like Bama and LSU-after they lose top players to the NFL, they reload with more star players-that is how the elite programs operate. We are just not quite there yet.

I have checked with my leading recruiting source and here are a few kids he feels like we are in good standing with and SHOULD be ours coming signing day (note, my source is Lowndes25 for those that might have heard of him and he is a VERY reliable source I might add)

Josh Harvey Clemons
Kenderius Whitehead
Todd Gurley
Sheldon Dawson
JUCO WR Cordarelle Patterson-although grades might be a concern
Avery Young-we are neck and neck on this kid but we have very decent shot here

That would be 6 more to add to our list of 16 now including Jenkins. We had three recruits enroll early and they are already in school, Faton Bauta QB, Keith Marshall RB, and Mark Beard OL. Of course we still wait word on Orson Charles, Rambo, Williams, Washington and Branden Smith. From what I have heard, the two most likely to leave would be Charles and Rambo both of which are thought to be nearly certain to leave. Williams and Smith should be back, Washington is still on the fence. Bottom line, we are going to have more spots open and there will be some last minute additions to our class-we might flip some kids or we might have some under the radar kids that will get last minute offers. All in all though, if we finish with the 6 I name above, if not Gurley than Mike Davis at RB, this will be a super class. Next year should be another Dream Team type class so the future is looking bright for us talent wise. Now, I still believe on offense our entire offensive coaching staff needs to take a road trip down to New Orleans-visit with Sean Payton and his offensive staff on how they use Drew Brees. If you notice, the Saints DO run out of pro set some of the time-but that offense is built around Brees and the passing game. I believe if we are to get the most out of Aaron Murray, we need to be more of a spread with some pro set mixed in. But our strength on offense is a lot of quality WR's, backs that are good in space and can catch the ball well, and a mobile athletic QB that can throw well on the run. Why not build our offense around the QB we have in place. Why force a square peg into a round hole. But that is just me. Like I say, with our defense and our schedule, we just need the offense and our young kickers to do their job-not try to do too much and we will win a lot of games next year.

Ok, a quick note about the hoops team as they play tonight at 7p in Gainesville, Florida against the nationally ranked Gators, game is one ESPN. The Gators are 12-4 but 0-1 in SEC play as UT beat them in Knoxville on Saturday. This Gator team beat us twice last year, they have size and experience, good shooters, good rebounders, they are a solid team. Our team is struggling with rebounding, struggling with defense at times, we have trouble scoring any points down low and thus we rely on outside shots falling and then sometimes we can score in transition or Robinson can penetrate for some easy buckets. Honestly tonight has a chance to get ugly because UF is tough at home, they have much more talent than we do, it just doesn't look good for us. We have a favorable football schedule last year and in 2012 but certainly that is not the case in hoops. We started with a really strong Bama team, then play road games at UF and at Vandy-WOW. After the Vandy game, we will get three straight home games, 2 of which we might stand a chance-UT and Ole Miss. Bottom line, this team is going to struggle to win SEC games this year, there are some teams we have enough talent to win but unless we pull off a huge upset, I see an 0-3 start to the conference schedule.

Bama game this Saturday

Now that football is over, I will try to post more on the hoops team, although not as much as last year because quite honestly, this team is really hard to watch. I have watched them play several games thus far on TV-part of the Cal game, part of the ND game, almost all of the Colorado and GT game, SCal game, Mercer game and Winthrop game. This team has a truly gifted player in Caldwell-Pope, two pretty solid guards in Robinson and Ware, an improving but still inconsistent Donte' Williams, a much improved Vincent Williams, a steady and solid Connor Notle, Nemanja is a decent looking prospect. Put it all together and you have an athletic team but one that has limited scoring ability. We have very little low post ability, DWilliams as I mentioned is much improved but he is pretty much all we got. Nemanja is a pretty big kid but he is more perimeter oriented. Our best rebounder, Marcus Thornton is out with a bad knee. My point being, this team is going to struggle to be the upper level SEC teams but should be pretty competitive with the average or below average SEC teams. As it stands now, the following appear the best of the SEC-
Upper tier
UK
UF
Miss State
Bama

Mid tier
Ark
Vandy (they are upper tier but have played mid so far)

Lower tier
UGA
LSU
Miss
AU
SC
UT

I would say we have a shot to win 5-6 conference games this year, if we get to 8, Fox will have done a very good job. But, if we could somehow win that opener, it might be possible to get to 8 wins. We have two games with SC and UT, we get Miss and Ark at home, have LSU and AU on the road. So you figure we lose both UK and UF games, lose to Miss St on the road, that is 5 losses. Say we lose to SC and or UT on the road-that puts us at 6. We always lose at Vandy, that is 7, so there you go. You feel confident in saying we have 7 guaranteed losses to start the year. That makes games like Sat against Bama huge to me because if you can steal a game at home against an upper level team, you might also find a way to sweep SC or UT. I would have to say though, we have not played horribly away from home, beating SCal on the road, losing to CU by only two, we beat ND on a neutral floor, our worst loss was the HORRIBLE loss to GT.

SO, we have Bama coming to town fresh off a 25 point win over GTU in Philips arena. Bama was the team that was competing with us last year for a spot in the NCAA, we got the nod over them despite the fact they beat us twice, once in Tuscie and once at the SEC tourney. This team is likely better than that team and we are obviously not nearly as good. They are 11-3 only losing at K-State, vs Georgetown and Dayton. Gtown and K-State are nationally ranked as were the Tide earlier in the season. They are led by JaMychal Green who averages 15pts and nearly 7 rebouds a game, he was hard for our bigs to handle last year-will be even tougher this year. Tony Mitchell is also averaging 15pts a game and 7 boards a game, followed by the very quick PG Trevor Releford who is at 12pts. Andrew Steele is at 9pts a game and is a really clutch guard and is just back from injury. They have a very deep bench, with 8 guys getting 18 minutes a game or more-I throw Steele into that group of 8 because he will be getting that much time when he is back to 100%. Bama is not a great three team, and their big guys don't shoot FT's the greatest but this team plays VERY strong defense and they will have a big size/experience advantage on us for sure.

I look for Bama to try to go down low to Green and Mitchell, get fouls or easy buckets and then play solid perimeter D on us-they know we tend to live or die by the three. They have some pretty solid guards and Robinson will NOT have the quickness advantage of Releford, that will something he will have to adjust to. They have a very athletic team, it will be very difficult for us to get quality shots and score tomorrow. We MUST be solid on D and REBOUND the ball-they make a living out of crashing the boards and getting mulitple shots-rebounding is an area we have struggled at times. I really don't like this matchup, this team matches our athletic ability and just has more talent. It will take a great effort from our team to keep this close and find a way to win. Again, defense and rebounding are two areas of the game that are all about effort and intensity-if we can do both well, hopefully it will allow us to stay in the game. If you are in the game late, you always have a shot to win and that is what we have to hope for tomorrow. Tip is 7p and will be televised on Fox sportsnet.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Go Dogs an Go Falcons on Sunday.
